January 17,
2003...CELCO, Rancho Cucamonga, CA, the leader in digital film recording
systems, announced that Post Logic Studios has purchased and installed the
FURY digital film recorder. Established in 1986 and with facilities in
Hollywood and Santa Monica, Post Logic Studios provides unmatched digital
mastering, post-production, visual effects, and audio post-production
services to feature film, commercial and television clients. These
capabilities are being further augmented through introduction of digital
intermediate services from a fully equipped, side-by-side 35mm/digital
projection theater currently under construction.
Because of its foray
into the digital intermediate field, Post Logic Studios required a film
recorder that was both fast and reliable. After investigating the laser
option, which proved to be unstable - and carried high maintenance costs,
the company decided on CELCO's newest film recorder, the FURY. CELCO's technical service and support, which Post Logic knew to be excellent from
previous experience, was also a large factor, especially in maximizing
investment as the facility equipped itself for digital intermediate. In
addition, Post Logic felt it would take five laser recorders to match the
output of one CELCO FURY, so there was a significant cost advantage as
well. Using the FURY, the film will "match" from reel to reel
coming from the same recorder without the hassle of aligning multiple
machines.
Henry Ball, Digital
Imaging Supervisor/Senior Engineer at Post Logic Studios, says, "The
CELCO FURY has moved flawlessly into our workflow. Our scanning and
restoration work all integrate seamlessly with the FURY. The images are
beautiful as well as consistent, and we have received praise from the most
demanding people in the business. In addition, with the FURY's ability to
shoot intermediate stock as well as original camera negatives on Kodak
5245, we have a competitive advantage when we need to give HD video and CG
acquisition a truly natural film-type 'look' with real natural film
grain."
Ball also says use
of the FURY enables Post Logic to expose an interpositive directly to the
film, thereby saving the generational loss normally experienced in the
lab. "Striking original negative for theatrical release puts the
audience only one generation away from the negative instead of
three," he explains. "The result is an image that is sharper
than ever before experienced."
The FURY, CELCO's
latest advance in digital film recording technology, will output a
high-resolution frame of film in one second. Facilities such as Post Logic
will be able to output approximately 60 minutes of high-resolution digital
film per day. The FURY's one-second speed includes both high definition
and 2K images onto Kodak 5245 camera negative stock, and less than two
seconds per frame for a full Cineon density range 2K image onto Kodak
intermediate 2242 film stock. The system is also capable of very
high-speed output of any resolution up to 4K or higher for larger format
purposes such as 70mm. The FURY can output any type of film stock,
including color and black and white intermediate and camera negative
stocks. In addition, the new system can also output to multiple film
formats including 16mm, 35mm, and 65mm 5, 8, 10, and 15-perf (IMAX
format).

About CELCO:
CELCO was founded in
1950 by John M. Constantine Sr. as an engineering laboratory dedicated to
high resolution display technology. CELCO’s innovations in the field of
electron beam control soon made the company a leading producer of electron
optics including deflection yokes and focus coils used in high resolution
display systems. Its display components have been used for an abundance of
military and civilian applications in everything from fighter jets, flight
simulators, medical imaging systems, electron beam welders, to the space
shuttle. CELCO also became known for its lab standard test equipment
including high performance deflection amplifiers and precision display
systems. The technologies evolved into the production of complete digital
imaging systems starting in the 1970s with large format satellite imaging
systems to the first motion picture digital film recorder used for
Disney’s TRON in the early 1980s.
